Why Saddle-Stapled Books Are a More Environmentally Friendly Choice Than Perfect Bound Books
As sustainability becomes an increasingly important consideration in publishing and printing, the choice of binding method plays a surprisingly significant role in a book’s environmental impact. Two of the most common binding techniques – saddle stitching/stapling and perfect binding – differ not only in appearance and durability, but also in their ecological footprint. In many cases, saddle-stitched books offer a more environmentally responsible option.
1. Reduced Material Usage
Saddle stitching is a minimalist binding method that uses folded sheets of paper stapled together along the spine. This process requires only a small amount of metal – typically two staples – to hold the book together. In contrast, perfect binding involves gluing individual pages to a heavier paperboard cover using strong adhesives.
The additional materials required for perfect binding – particularly glue and thicker cover stock – result in greater resource consumption. Adhesives are often petroleum-based and can be difficult to recycle, increasing their environmental burden.
2. Improved Recyclability
One of the key advantages of saddle-stapled booklets is their ease of recycling. Because they consist primarily of paper with minimal metal, they can be processed efficiently in standard recycling systems. The small staples are easily removed or filtered out during the recycling process.
Perfect bound books, however, present more challenges. The glue used in the spine can contaminate paper recycling streams, and separating the adhesive from the paper fibers is more energy-intensive. In some cases, this can reduce the quality of recycled paper or result in more waste being diverted to landfill. “The effect of packaging adhesives on wastepaper recycling” Science Direct
3. Lower Energy Consumption in Production
The production process for saddle stitching is relatively simple and requires less machinery and energy. Folding and stapling are quick, mechanical processes that can be completed with minimal heat or chemical use.
Perfect binding, on the other hand, involves multiple additional steps, including spine preparation, glue application, and curing. These steps often require heat and longer processing times, increasing overall energy consumption during manufacturing.
4. Reduced Waste Generation
Saddle-stapled books are typically produced with fewer offcuts and less excess material. Because the pages are nested and folded together, paper usage is often more efficient, especially for shorter publications.
Perfect binding can generate more waste due to trimming and the need for precise page alignment. Additionally, unused adhesive and misbound copies contribute to material waste during production.
5. Lighter Weight and Lower Transportation Impact
Saddle-stapled books are generally lighter than perfect bound books because they use fewer materials and thinner covers. This reduced weight translates to lower transportation emissions when shipping large quantities.
While the difference per book may seem small, it becomes significant at scale—particularly for publishers distributing thousands or millions of copies.
6. Ideal for Shorter Publications
From an environmental perspective, saddle stitching is especially well-suited to shorter publications such as magazines, brochures, and booklets. Using perfect binding for these types of materials can be unnecessarily resource-intensive.
By choosing saddle stitching where appropriate, publishers can align production methods with the actual needs of the publication, avoiding over-engineering and excess material use.
While perfect binding has its place – particularly for thicker, long-lasting books – saddle stitching offers a more sustainable alternative for many types of publications. Its lower material requirements, improved recyclability, reduced energy consumption, and lighter environmental footprint make it a compelling choice for environmentally conscious printing.
As the publishing industry continues to seek greener practices, even small decisions like binding methods can contribute meaningfully to reducing overall environmental impact.
We now have a brand new booklet maker that create portrait and landscape booklets with over 100 pages. It will make square back books similar to perfect bound but using a staple. Check out the options on our booklets page and feel free to order a sample book.
PAPERS
White Recycled
High-grade recycled paper made from 100% recycled pulp. An uncoated finish in bright white.
Forensic Description: A very bright white for a recycled card. It leans towards having a hint of grey, rather than blue or traditionally, yellow. The uncoated texture, subtle and soft to the touch, contains minute fragments of darker fibres picked up in the recycling process. At 350gsm it has a nice snap to it, not found in similar weights of coated papers. The 170gsm also feels more like 200gsm, so more than adequate for a premium looking flyer material.
The environmental credentials of our white, natural & silk recycled are exceptional, with an array of certificates, labels and awards associated with its raw material procurement and manufacture.

Silk Recycled
A super smooth, high white silk coated paper. Made from 100% recycled pulp.
Forensic Description: The 'satin like' silk coating on this paper allows dry toner to sit on top and dry quickly. This means that colours are not absorbed into the fibres and allows for a slightly more vivid and detailed image. You will still find small flecks of recycled material in the paper if you look close enough and the paper itself 'although very much white' leans towards a warmer yellow off-white. It has a glossy finish when using high amounts of ink or toner, one reason we no longer sell a gloss option.

Natural Recycled
An uncoated recycled paper in a natural shade. Manufactured without the use of Optical Bleaching Agents (OBA). Probably the most environmentally friendly paper we supply.
Forensic Description: This natural paper stock is off-white and full of interesting long recycled fibres, when viewed up close. It has a lovely soft feel for an uncoated material and a nice snap and thickness across the varying weights. This paper is ideal if you are wanting your product to look 'recycled' and 'raw', It is also great for any form of text advertising, as the off-white colour in contrast with a black or blue text is easy on the eyes.

Elephant Poo
Yes, it really does include Elephant Poo! A high quality crafted paper made using the first mechanical paper making machine local to us in the south of the UK. Made using at least 70% recycled material, sometimes more, with the inclusion of Elephant Poo which gives it the varied texture and flecks. All paper is made from plant & natural fibre… And this does’t have to come from tress! The Charity Paper Mill supports the work of elephant sanctuaries in Thailand by utilising the huge quantities of usable plant fibre that isn’t digested by their resident elephants. Herbivores with a high fibre diet are the ideal waste producer, with rhino, reindeer, giraffe and koala, all contributing to our efforts to reduce deforestation and use alternative sources of fibre.
Forensic Description: Rich in texture throughout, the flecks and added particles are clearly visible without being overbearing through a printed image. The 280gsm feels more like 350gsm, as it has a nice snap to it. The paper feels rough to touch, but it has an honest raw feeling which seems ideal for invitations or postcards requiring some substance. The print quality is slightly affected in the few uneven areas, but overall a fascinating paper that will only enrich your print design.

ARTWORK SETUP
We would love it if you supply your artwork with 3mm of bleed added around the outside edge of your page or artboard.
The best type of file to supply is a PDF file. With single pages rather than spreads where applicable.
Images can be sent as JPG files.
What is Bleed?
Bleed is that extra bit we stick outside the design area to ensure that the design runs to the edge of the page once trimmed.
Without this there is a very high risk of white unprinted paper appearing at the edge of your printed design.
How to apply bleed
You can apply bleed by making your artboard or page 3mm bigger on all sides.
You’ll need to make sure no text or information that you want to be included in the final print is within 8mm from the edge of the page to be within a safe area for trimming.
Note: We will do our best to print your file as close to how you have it on screen. If it looks fuzzy or pixelated on screen it will print that way. Try to provide high resolution images when ever possible.
Delivery and Turnaround
Our turnaround on most types of printing is 5 working days. This means that if we receive a request to print on Monday, it will typically arrive by Friday. If there is chance of a delay we will let you know. Sometimes changes in artwork and design can slow down the process. Larger jobs may take longer, we will notify you if this is the case.
Always let us know when you need something urgently. We do not charge extra for this, however, in some cases it may not be possible. We promise to do our best.
Standard Delivery is Next Day with Parcel Force, the cost for this is currently £4.95 + vat. They also offer a pre-12 and Saturday delivery if required. In some cases we send out deliveries with Royal Mail. This service is for smaller ‘Large Letter’ parcels.
Delivery is free if you spend over £100 (ex vat) in total on any products via the website.
